  • Whole Grain or Seed Crackers: Crackers made from whole grains or that include seeds are a better choice because they offer more nutritional value, including fiber and some protein.
  • Low-Sodium Varieties: If you can find crackers that are low in sodium and free from flavored coatings, these can be offered in small amounts.

Feeding birds crackers should be done sparingly and thoughtfully, considering the minimal nutritional value crackers provide compared to their natural food sources.

  • Crumble Into Small Pieces: Break the crackers into small, bite-sized pieces to make it easier for birds to eat and digest.
  • Mix with More Nutritious Foods: Consider mixing the crumbled crackers with seed mixes, ensuring that birds get more of the nutrients they need. This method also helps in stretching out more nutritious foods if you’re looking to economize.
  • Occasional Treat: Treat crackers as an occasional snack for birds, not a staple of their diet. Their primary nutrition should come from birdseed, fruits, and suet.

Remember, the joy of feeding birds comes from seeing them thrive in your backyard, and the best way to ensure their health and happiness is to provide them with nutritious, bird-friendly foods. If you choose to feed birds crackers, opt for plain, unsalted varieties, and consider them only as an occasional treat rather than a dietary staple.
