Nutritional Value of Sweet Potatoes for Birds

Sweet potatoes are rich in:

  • Vitamins: They are high in vitamins A and C, which are essential for a bird’s immune system and overall health.
  • Minerals: Sweet potatoes provide valuable minerals like potassium and manganese.
  • Fiber: They offer dietary fiber, aiding in a bird’s digestion.
  • Antioxidants: The rich color of sweet potatoes, especially the orange variety, indicates a high level of beneficial antioxidants.

You may already be feeding potatoes to birds but you’ll find that sweet potatoes generally have higher levels of vitamins, particularly vitamin A, compared to regular white potatoes. Also, unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes do not contain solanine, a toxin that can be harmful to birds, especially when potatoes are green or sprouted.

Which Birds Might Eat Sweet Potato?

In a backyard setting, sweet potatoes might attract a variety of birds, especially those that are known to enjoy fruits and vegetables. Here are some backyard birds that might be inclined to try sweet potato:

  • Northern Cardinals: These birds have a diverse diet and may be attracted to soft, cooked sweet potato pieces.
  • Blue Jays: Known for their varied diet, Blue Jays might sample sweet potato, especially if it’s chopped into small, manageable pieces.
  • American Robins: While they primarily eat worms and insects, robins can be attracted to fruits and may show interest in sweet potatoes as well.
  • Mockingbirds: These birds are known to eat a wide range of fruits and could be interested in sweet potato.
  • Orioles: They typically prefer fruits, and sweet potato could appeal to them, especially if it’s brightly colored.
  • Sparrows and Finches: These smaller birds, which often eat seeds and grains, might also peck at sweet potato pieces.
  • Starlings: Starlings are not picky eaters and may be drawn to sweet potatoes along with other fruits and vegetables.

Remember, the likelihood of these birds eating sweet potato will depend on how it’s served (cooked and cut into small pieces is best) and the individual preferences of the birds in your area. Also, offering sweet potato at a bird feeder should be done in moderation and as part of a varied diet.

How to Serve Sweet Potatoes to Birds

Raw sweet potatoes can be hard and difficult to digest for birds. Cooking them (either boiling or baking without any added ingredients) makes them softer and easier to eat. Ensure the sweet potato is cut into small, manageable sizes for birds to eat easily.

Avoid adding butter, salt, sugar, or spices, as these can be harmful to birds! That means that you don’t want serve the leftover sweet potato casseroles or pies at the feeder.
