Can Squirrels Eat Apple Cores?

Sharing is caring!

When feeding squirrels, many people wonder about the suitability of various fruits and their remnants, such as apple cores. While squirrels are known to enjoy a range of fruits, it’s important to consider the safety of specific parts like apple cores–which offer real danger to squirrels.

Safety of Apple Cores for Squirrels

Squirrels can eat the flesh of apples and generally enjoy them–but caution is needed when it comes to apple cores and seeds.

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, a compound that can release cyanide when digested. In large quantities, this can be toxic, although squirrels would need to consume a significant number of seeds for it to be harmful. (After all, some squirrels are lucky enough to live where apples grow naturally!)

If you are eating an apple, feel free to toss that apple core toward the bird feeding station–you just wouldn’t want to supply dozens of apple cores.

Best Ways to Serve Apples to Squirrels

Remove the Core and Seeds: Before offering apples to squirrels, remove the core and seeds.

Offer in Slices: Provide apple slices instead of whole apples or cores. This makes it easier for squirrels to eat and enjoy the fruit safely.

Fresh and Washed: Ensure the apples are fresh and thoroughly washed to remove any pesticides or chemicals.

Alternatives to Apple Cores

If you’re keeping the apple for yourself but are looking for other foods to share with squirrels at your feeder, you’ll find a good selection:

  • Other Fruits: Offer other fruits like bananas, grapes, or berries, which are safe and popular among squirrels.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Squirrels naturally eat a variety of nuts and seeds, which are crucial for their diet.
  • Vegetables: Some squirrels may also enjoy vegetables like carrots, squash, or broccoli.

While squirrels can safely eat the flesh of apples, it’s best to avoid giving them apple cores due to the potential risks associated with the seeds. By providing apple slices or other squirrel-friendly foods, you can enjoy watching these playful animals in your backyard without compromising their health.
