Nutritional Value of Walnuts for Squirrels

Walnuts are indeed a suitable and beneficial food choice for squirrels. They are a natural part of many squirrels’ diets, especially in regions where walnut trees are common.

  • Rich in Nutrients: Walnuts are high in healthy fats, proteins, and essential vitamins and minerals, making them an excellent energy source for squirrels.
  • Beneficial Fats: The fats in walnuts are good for squirrels’ fur and overall health.

Serving Walnuts to Squirrels

Squirrels can eat walnuts whether they are in the shell or shelled. The process of gnawing through the shell to get to the nut inside can also help squirrels keep their teeth sharp and healthy.

Shelled walnuts are especially beneficial to younger or weaker squirrels who might struggle with the shells.

Precautions When Feeding Walnuts to Squirrels

  • Avoid Salted or Flavored Walnuts: Only feed natural, unsalted, and unflavored walnuts to squirrels. Seasoned nuts can be harmful to their health.
  • Freshness Matters: Ensure the walnuts are not moldy or spoiled, as this can pose health risks to squirrels.
  • Nuts Only! While walnuts are a great food for squirrels, prepared and processed foods such as walnut cookies are NOT appropriate for squirrels.

Walnuts can be a healthy and enjoyable addition to a squirrel’s diet. By providing these nuts in their natural form and in moderation, you can help ensure that the squirrels in your backyard remain healthy and active.
